My Top 10 European Spots
My Top 10 European Spots
With the summer in full swing it’s a great time to get an inter-rail pass and explore Europe’s top spots. STA Travel offer these direct on their website at great prices.
Obviously this list is one of personal preference accounting for culture spots, the nightlife, general vibe and what I feel is important to fellow travellers. As there are so many amazing spots in Europe this is just a snippet of what is on offer on the continent, especially with the freedom of an inter-rail ticket. Having spent a couple months exploring this is compiled based on a large sample of amazing locations.
- Bergen, Norway
With stunning views of various mountain ranges, fjords and a well-connected metropolitan city Bergen boasts a plethora of great activities. Hike the Viden trail between Mount Ulriken and Mount Floyen direct from the Bergen city centre or take the train or various buses to nearby Fjords.
- Hamburg, Germany
A buzzing city in northern Germany that acts as Germany’s gateway to the world with an impressive and beautiful port which can be admired from St Michaels Church tower or the embankment on the other side of the river. Great night life and plenty of beautiful churches and museums to get stuck into.
- Barcelona, Spain
Beach, buzzing city centre, on looking forested hills and the iconic Sagrada Familia. A great chill out spot and easy connections by train direct to Paris (5hrs) or Madrid (2hrs).
- Berlin, Germany
A buzzing atmosphere with great nightlife and some amazing sites of historical importance.
- Krakow, Poland
Located in South western Poland, Krakow is home to some of the darkest but most inspiring history. Depicting a tragic story of Nazi brutality mixed in with resistance from brave Jewish men and women, Krakow is home to sites like Schindler’s Enamel factory, Auschwitz Birkenau and the Ghetto. Steeped in historical importance, Krakow also has significant churches and Synagogues, along with the castle atop the hill. A really worthy and quite cheap place to go.
- Venice, Italy
The classic that consistently makes it to the top of these lists for obvious reasons. A phenomenon with culture a plenty.
- Vienna, Austria
A nice and relaxed city with sites like the Schonbrunn, Vienna opera house and St Stephens Cathedral. Great for a stop off on the way down through Germany to south eastern Europe with high speed trains connecting the city to Budapest.
- Budapest, Hungary
Two great neighbourhoods define the capital city of Hungary, Buda and Pest. Climb up to the top of the hill in Buda to reach the Buda castle, or explore the other side of the city and have a walk through the city centre, check out the victory column, or explore one of many worthwhile museums. A great inexpensive city with plenty of nightlife and culture on offer.
- Bilbao, Spain
An historic city in the heart of the Basque country in Northern Spain. Home to the Guggenheim museum this is an art buffs paradise. For everyone else enjoy tapas at the numerous bars on the street or check out the local football team.
- Stockholm, Sweden
From the old town in Gamla Stan to the Djurgarden park and the royal palace, Stockholm is truly wonderful city. Jump on a ferry and check out the ABBA museum (if that’s your thing) or check out the rides at Grona Lund in Djurgarden.
